Install at your own risk. However, there really isn't that much of a risk. If for whatever reason it does crash your browser, just start it up in safe mode and uninstall the extension. No real permanent damage will be done.
Apparently Macs suck, so if you have one, don't install this extension yet.
Now that the scary disclaimer is over:
The installation will probably be blocked by Firefox. In the message bar that appears at the top of your browser, click "Edit Options…" In the window that appears, click "Allow" and then close. Click to Install again.
In the Software Installation window that appears, wait for the install to activate and then click "Install Now".
After the extension has installed, you will need to restart Firefox.
An Options window should appear automatically on first run. Please fill in your newsvine domain. You can also choose how many items you would like to display in your watchlist and how often you would like it to update.* Restart your browser once more for all of the settings to take affect and to allow Firevine to build its toolbar buttons.
Please update your feeds and make sure that your watchlist feed is accessible. It will be needed to provide your watchlist for Firevine.
*Your watchlist won't continually update. It will only update when you view it. This delay just prevents the watchlist from updating too often.
Even if a feature is not new, it will now be accessed from a new location.
At top in your Firevine menu, there is now a Newsvine menu, filled a whole bunch of new and useful tools. From this menu you can seed the current page, navigate to newsvine or your newsvine column. You will also have quick access to an array of tools to manage your seeds and articles, or even your groups, friends and earnings.
The Newsvine menu will also provide you with easy access to the Code of Honor. If you come upon a CoH violation, just select the violation from this menu and a warning message will be automatically generated in the open comment box. This feature is based largely on the Code of Honor Bookmarklet created by finalcut.
A quick access to your top watchlisted items will also be available from the Newsvine menu.
Finally, you can access help and further information for Firevine as well as its options or about dialogs.
You should have two new toolbar buttons for quick access to both newsvine and your newsvine column. If you do not see these buttons, try restarting your browser.
Want to seed a page fast? Just select some text, right click and WHAM! A Seed This Page... link right there for you. Even better, see a link that you want to seed? Right click over it and seed the link straight.
If you are on newsvine at a comment box, you will also have access to that quick Code of Honor auto-generator as well. Just right click in a comment box, and select the violation.
It seems that many of you didn't care so much for the giant toolbar. It took up a bit too much space for your needs. Fair enough, the toolbar is gone and everything is further embedded into Firefox itself.
If you had a previously installed version of Firevine, you may have noticed that the button that would notify you whether an article was already seeded to newsvine pretty much stopped working. It seems that some backend stuff was changed by newsvine themselves, rendering that method I used worthless. Why have a feature that doesn't work?
None so far. Please let me know if you find any and then check back here in a day or two for updates.
I'm working on integrating a newsvine search directly into the URL bar. So far so good.
A proper newsvine API would be nice.
If any of you can find a way to screen scrape the watchlist from newsvine using only javascript, a big Firevine contributer credit will come your way ;-)
Wow Adam - it seems like ages ago that you announced this project. I am thrilled to see it come to fruition as a incredibly useful and damn-near ingenious add-on for Firefox. Thanks for all your hard work.
I clipped this article to the firefox users group.
Brilliant, Adam.
The only suggestion I have is perhaps adding a link to Vinestalk.
Other than that, it has everything.
Vinestalk integration would be pretty cool.
Actually, check out the new Full text search. I guess Tom updated it last week. It includes Vinestalk-like results along with a newly revamped search of recent articles. The recent articles part needs a little tweaking in my opinion, but otherwise it's pretty cool.
Alright! Finally!
One bug:
Seemed to reset my entire toolbar. Before, I had all my buttons and address bar in the top bar (where the menu is). Firevine reset that (it was easy to drag and drop the icons). Just an FYI.
And one question. Is the Seed button coming back? I don't really like the context menu a lot.
Very clever of you to release this for the Survivor challenge...
Oh, and by the way, I'm a Kubuntu user. I haven't tested Windows yet.
It reset my toolbar too, and here's the funky thing, it wouldn't let me fix it. So I uninstalled, fixed my toolbar, and then installed it again, and everything seems to be functioning fine. I should seed something.
By the way, I'm on Windows.
It seems to be working well for me with one exception. It removed my del.icio.us buttons (though it didn't disable the plugin - the dropdown menu for del.icio.us still works) and I can't figure out how to get them back. I've tried disabling and re-enabling without success. Any ideas?
Anyway, great work. I like this much better than the toolbar. Thanks!
Evan, have you tried to right-click the toolbar and click "Customize..."? If people are saying that it resets your toolbars, then the buttons were most likely removed because of that. All you have to do is drag the del.icio.us icons back on to the toolbar where you want them.
Aha! Thanks Elliot. I just started using Firefox a couple months ago, so I'm not exactly well-versed yet. I just learned something.
It looks great, Adam. I didn't even notice where it was at first because it fit so seamlessly between Bookmarks and Tools on my menu.
A few "bugs," which could possibly be my own stupidity manifesting itself. I should note I'm on a Mac runing OSX Tiger.
1. The Options menu doesn't have an "OK" button inside, which alone is okay, but sometimes when I click on Options the OSX Exit and Minimize buttons are disabled as well... which basically makes it stuck on top of everything.
2. I have pop-up blocker disabled, and clicking "Seed Newsvine" when I'm on a page apparently treats it like a pop-up from the page I'm on. For example, if I was on kotaku.com and clicked the regular "Seed Newsvine" button supplied by the NV staff, the NV pop-up comes and I've already allowed that. But if I click the menu "Seed Newsvine" from this extension, it treats it like Kotaku is trying for a pop-up, and I don't want to enable pop-ups for every place I seed from.
3. Here's where I think I'm just doing something wrong. I've configured my options, but clicking "Newsvine Home" or "Your Column" or... basically anything, just does nothing. It doesn't go to any location. Again, that could just be me acting dumb.
2. I have pop-up blocker disabled,
Err... I should say "enabled," otherwise that bug makes no sense. I was thinking "I have pop-up blocker enabled" and "I have pop-ups disabled" at the same time.
I guess, I'll add a "Not for you Mac users warning".
Where's the love?
I don't have any
:-P
Fine, I use Camino on my Mac anyway.
Great job, Adam.
Of course, considering the only pages ever open in my browser are Newsvine pages... I probably don't have all that much use for it. Although, the little CoH thingy sounds darn right nifty.
lol
Here's a funny bug:
Customize your toolbar and drag the Newsvine and Your Column buttons off the toolbar. They appear in the bin of unused icons, but their preview icons are the entire set of icons available by default, with their overlays for mouseovers, etc.--quite large and weird-looking.
Restarting the browser doesn't clear this up, but they do display in the toolbar just fine.
using Firefox 2.0.0.4 on Windows XP
Same here, using 2.0.0.4 on Kubuntu
Apparently Macs suck, so if you have one, don't install this extension yet.
Correction: Firefox for Mac sucks.
Sorry for the millions of messages.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that despite some minor bugs and the lack of support for Macs, great job! I definitely support the move from a toolbar to a menu, and I love the new CoH inserter (Thanks finalcut, too!)--of course I just noticed a small bug in that, too*.
As far as the lack of search integration currently, why not just add some new search "engines" to the already existing search box?
* CoH inserter bug: doesn't work on reply comments at all, only first-class comments.
It just doesn't save any time to type something in, then go down the scroll list to find your search engine and then submit. Plus, there would need to be three different engines.
It doesn't save time to do that with any search engine, if you know how to make a quicksearch bookmark, yet people still seem to like the box. Oh well.
Anyway, another future feature request: customizable auto-texts, prefilled with the CoH, but fully editable. :)
The second "Click to install" link is to an old file (v0.30) which no longer exsists.
Great extension btw!
Great job Adam. It looks like you have put a bunch of great features into it. I'm glad my minor contribution was able to come in handy. Thanks for the "plug" though, honestly, it was unnecessary as it was freer than speech or beer :O)
Just a quick note - when I installed the "options" window didn't open automatically on firefox restart. No biggie but it is in contradiction to your description.
I'm on FF 2.0.0.4 on Win XP
It did for me. Mine was a fresh install (no previous version of firevine).
Awesomeness. Been waiting for the next update :D
By the way, how's the conversation tracker going (or should I not have asked that ;-))?
I'll have to give this an install later. Sucks that the color-changing button won't work. That was the best part.
Another bug (left over from 0.3):
When you use the "seed" function (right-click>Seed), it will pop open a new window. Great, right? But when seeding another site, the seed window changes from the old seed. In other words, I'm seeding digg.com. A window pops open. I go back to Firefox, and seed Slashdot. The seed window for Digg changes to the seed window for Slashdot.
Well I finally got around to installing it. So far... it's great. Good job!
Unfortunately, I fall into the realm of "uses a mac" and therefore can't use it, but I'm impressed by the effort nonetheless.
Adam! I'm finally able to come comment here now that the Survivor week is over. Nice job. I do miss the toolbar a little, as I had come to rely on the search box, but I'm over it already. Great work, and on that seed from Mashable, that lists your toolbar? The article writer showed up in the thread, and I pointed him towards this version, as he said he couldn't use the toolbar as it messed with some of his others.
Anyway, yeah! Adam!
Waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I have a Mac. *sniff sniff*
I'm getting an authentication prompt when clicking on the install link. Do you have an updated location?
I tried just after you posted this note and it still didn't work... but it did today. I'm guessing the newsvine servers just needed some time to update. Thanks!
Also, can you only vote for a newsvine article for a certain time after it's posted? I've clicked the vote button on this article several times and also used the 'Post Comment & Vote' button when I've posted comments. The vote total in my browser shows 50 votes, but when I reload it's back to 49 and the vote button is active again. So I'm not allowed to vote for this article, I guess.
So is a Firefox 3.0 version coming out soon?
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
