The Rams are in right about the same position as the Saints. A truly balanced and powerful offense with a suspect defense.

Steven Jackson is going to take another leap this year. Right now the running back hierarchy goes more or less LaDainian Tomlinson and everyone else with Steven Jackson being right at the top of that "everyone else." This time next year it will be Tomlinson and Jackson and everyone else. That's not to say that Tomlinson's touchdown record is jeopardy. Instead, it will be a far more balanced performance. Rushing, catching, scoring, he'll do it all. Not that Jackson hasn't already done it all, but just expect even more. And thus endith my ode to Steven Jackson.

San Francisco 49ers - 9-7

    Schedule

  1. L - Arizona
  2. L - at St. Louis
  3. W - at Pittsburgh
  4. W - Seattle
  5. L - Baltimore

  13. L - at Carolina
  14. W - Minnesota
  15. L - Cincinnati
  16. W - Tampa Bay
  17. W - at Cleveland

The Niners seem to be everyone's favorite sleeper this year. That can happen after a team goes from terrible to pretty damn decent. Mike Nolan has done a great job of rebuilding this once proud franchise. Alex Smith is looking like the real thing, Frank Gore was a major surprise, and the defense can actually stop some teams some of the times.

That said, progression is rarely linear, at least when it comes to record. Gaining three wins to get from four to seven is far easier then getting the next three to get to ten and the playoffs. Not to say that a nine win team won't make the playoffs in the NFC, it's just not guaranteed. The 49ers will be a better team for sure, they just won't be as good as so many predict.

Seattle Seahawks - 5-11

    Schedule

  1. L - Tampa Bay
  2. L - at Arizona
  3. W - Cincinnati
  4. L - at San Francisco
  5. L - at Pittsburgh
  6. L - New Orleans
  7. W - St. Louis
  8. bye
  9. L - at Cleveland
  10. L - San Francisco
  11. W - Chicago
  12. L - at St. Louis
  13. W - at Philadelphia
  14. L - Arizona
  15. L - at Carolina
  16. W - Baltimore
  17. L - at Atlanta

I'll admit it upfront, for some subconscious reason I really hate the Seahawks. I have no respect for Matt Hasselbeck or Shaun Alexander. I don't care for any of their receivers nor the defense. I don't understand how they win other than just continually playing weak opponents. I just don't get them and I find little more enjoyable than predicting their demise.

Arizona Cardinals - 4-12

    Schedule

  1. W - at San Francisco
  2. W - Seattle
  3. L - at Baltimore
  4. L - Pittsburgh
  5. L - at St. Louis
  6. L - Carolina
  7. L - at Washington
  8. bye
  9. L - at Tampa Bay
  10. L - Detroit
  11. L - at Cincinnati
  12. W - San Francisco
  13. L - Cleveland
  14. W - at Seattle
  15. L - at New Orleans
  16. L - Atlanta
  17. L - St. Louis

Like Detroit, the Cardinals are a favorite year after year as a sleeper pick. I've been guilty a few years myself. How can you not like a team with Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Edgerin James and Matt Leinart. They even have a defensive stud in safety Adrian Wilson. Where's the disconnection between perception and reality? The offensive line. It's horrible and has been for a few years now. It has completely negated Edgerin James, and brings inconsistency to the passing game.

First rule to rebuilding a team, find a franchise quarterback and protect him well. Arizona got the first part right, but are lacking in the second. Though you have to wonder with all of Matt Leinart's off field shenanigans, does he have focus to lead the team. It's never a good sign when your star quarterback is more of a celebrity than a football player.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Shoot, I was hoping you'd predict the first division win by a team with a sub-500 record. It could happen this season

I did have Minnesota at .500 and winning the north. Though now that St. Louis's offensive line is decimated and the Niners played like crap, maybe the winner from the west will be a 7-9 team...

      From the author:

'I'll admit it upfront, for some subconscious reason I really hate the Seahawks.'

No problem. I suspect you are a Rams fan, and that is okay.

'I have no respect for Matt Hasselbeck or Shaun Alexander.'

      You will. Later...

Hasselbeck maybe, Shaun Alexander never. He's a 30y back entering the steep decline phase of his career. Just ask Corey Dillon, Marshal Faulk or any number of older backs.

And even when he was younger and "good" was it him being good or was it the offensive line being dominant and opening up Mac truck sized lanes for him?

Ok, I deeply respect their O-line back when they had Hutch.

Hmm. I was under the impression that he was pretty good.

He's Ron Dayne running behind a far superior line.

I hate to say it, but I agree with everything he says here. Nonetheless, I think the Seahawks have a good rhythm going this year and we don't have any season-ending injuries yet.

mark: crappy as it is that Tubbs is injured, it happened last year and they weren't expecting him this season anyway.

Weren't they one of the worst teams against the run? That's my big concern. I have no desire to see Frank Gore rush for 300 yards against the 'Hawks again this season.
