Vote Obama, Save the Yankees

We know that he didn't do any good for the Yankees

He may be a die hard fan, but what has he ever done for the Yankees?

advertisement

The New York Yankees have now gone the past eight seasons without a World Series title. For those following at home, their last championship occurred way back during the Clinton administration. President Clinton had the pleasure to preside over the entirety of the last Yankee dynasty. Prior to Clinton, neither Ronald Reagan nor George H.W. Bush saw a Yankee Championship as Commander in Chief. Jimmy Carter saw two, Ford and Nixon none.

Noticing a pattern yet? In fact, you have to go all the way back to President Eisenhower to find a Yankee World Series title during a Republican administration. On the other hand, since the 1920's, Lyndon Johnson has been the lone Democrat President not to witness a Yankee World Series title in office. All in all, of the 26 New York Yankee World Series titles, 19 have occurred with a Democrat in office, while only 7 have occurred under Republican leadership.

I think it's pretty obvious as to why the Yankees failed to win the World Series during the Bush Administration. President Bush is a former co-owner of the Texas Rangers, an American League rival of the Yankees. It is clear that President Bush struck a secret deal with Bud Selig and Major League Baseball to keep the Yankees from winning. It is unsure whether John McCain will keep that agreement alive, but it is pretty reasonable Obama won't.

Vote Obama, and the return of Yankee glory will usher in the return of American glory and economic good times. Is it just a coincidence that the last Yankee dynasty occurred smack dab in the middle of one of the greatest economic periods in history? It has been noted that Yankee ace Chien Ming Wang influences the stock market in Taiwan through his successes and failures. The New York Times Freakonomics blog has also noted this phenomenon as well as recognizing the influences that national soccer teams have on the respective economies of their home countries. A Yankee World Series win in 2009 will excite Wall Street and America and jump start this economy.

If Democrat administrations favor the Yankees, they downright love the Green Bay Packers. The lone Super Bowl of the Brett Favre era occurred during the Clinton Administration, while the Bart Starr era Packers won two Super Bowls, and six NFL Championships during the administrations of FDR, JFK and LBJ. Green Bay saw their first three NFL Championships during the Herbert Hoover and Calvin Coolidge administrations. That's nine total Packer championships for Democrats, and three for Republicans. If Obama wins today, you might as well go to Vegas and bet on the Packers for this upcoming Super Bowl.

The Chicago Bears may have won their only Super Bowl in 1985 when Reaganomics was in full swing, but they won six prior NFL Championships all during Democratic Administrations, from JFK, through FDR, all the way back to Woodrow Wilson, plus another two for the Republican Herbert Hoover. Likewise the St. Louis Rams won a Super Bowl for Bill Clinton and an NFL Championship for both Truman and FDR.

Now if you are a fan of the Oakland A's, vote for John McCain. The A's last saw a World Series for Bush the Elder, had a dynasty going for Richard Nixon, and another Dynasty for William Taft. Then throw in two World Series for Herbert Hoover, and an Obama victory does not bode well for the Athletics.

The San Francisco Giants haven't won a World Series since back when they were the New York Giants and Ike was in the White House. They won once for FDR, but their other three championships were for Harding and Teddy Roosevelt. To finish off New York, the Mets may have only two World Series titles, but both occurred for Republicans, Nixon and Reagan.

Republican administrations also happen to favor a couple of NFL franchises. The Indianapolis Colts have won Super Bowls for Bush the Junior and Richard Nixon, and NFL Championships for Nixon again and Ike twice. The New England Patriots may not be favored so much by Republicans as they are by President Bush who has seen all three of their Super Bowls. This makes a simple sort of sense, the only organization that likes to spy more than the Bush White House is the Bill Belichick Patriots.

So, does you're vote complement who you root for?

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I dedicate this article to jfxgillis, Democrat and Red Sox fan, and Andy Min, Republican and Yankee fan.

Oh yeah, this isn't actually an endorsement of any particular political candidate, just some good humored fun. I do however, endorse the Yankees.

I note, however, that you insist on using the prejorative "Democrat" rather than "Democratic."

How do the Mets fare under Democrats and Republicans?  How about the Cubs?

To finish off New York, the Mets may have only two World Series titles, but both occurred for Republicans, Nixon and Reagan.

The Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and then again in 1907, both for Teddy Roosevelt.

    Adam:

    Thanks man!

After the Red Sox Curse Reverse in '04 followed days later by the Kerry defeat, I wasn't as upset as I should've been when the Rays beat the Sox this year.

BTW, I seeded Curt Schilling's McCain endorsement--check out via the Sports 'n' Politics 'n' Stuff page.

Speaking of Schilling and Kerry... I can't wait until 2014, when Schilling knocks Johnny boy out of his Senate seat. Or, 2010, when Kennedy retires.

    Andy:

No kidding. Schilling doesn't have a chance. He's way too Republican for a Democratic state. He might be able to grab a House seat (he lives in a district with sizable but still minority GOP population, SW bedroom suburbs), but if he wants a Senate seat, he should go back to his childhood home, Alaska, or where he won his other World Series, Arizona.

Both  those states could have Senate vacancies soon.

Yeah, the only thing going for him is the name recognition (something anyone fighting against an incumbent has trouble with). But with Stevens probably retiring soon...

This is a sad day for the future of our nation.... Scary and sad!

I had more faith in the American voters than they appear to have shown.
